How to cut a full fringe & face framing tutorial by Tom Warr
In this video tutorial, Blue Tit Academy Director Tom Warr shares how to cut a full fringe and delicate face-framing layers. This soft shag style combines full fringe, subtle layering and soft lines to frame the face effortlessly. The result is a layered, flattering shape that keeps softness and structure in balance.
Cutting a full, layered fringe
To begin the fringe:
- Use a square layering technique at a 90° angle to add texture without losing fullness.
- Overdirect each section back to the previous, building weight at the corners to frame the eyebrows.
- Leave the length slightly longer to allow for natural lift once dry.
Tom’s tips:
- Stay on one side of the head for consistency.
- Use your mirror often to check symmetry.
- This creates a full but soft fringe that hugs the face gently.
Face-Framing around the cheeks
Section from the middle of the fringe to just in front of the ear. Then:
- Overdirect each piece to the centre of the face.
- Use the same cutting angle to keep consistent weight.
- This creates soft, flattering pieces that sit naturally when hair is tied up or tucked back.
- If needed, go back in and point cut the ends to reduce bulk and customise the shape.
Layering the top & front
- Use square layering at 180° across the top and front to create light, choppy movement.
- Connect this into the back using a concave layering technique – this allows short layers at the front without losing overall length.
- This combo keeps the look soft but structured, with shorter energy around the face.
Detailing the fringe (dry)
Once dry, refine the fringe by:
- Point cutting to remove weight and bring up the length slightly.
- Cutting through the comb for precision.
- Target the brow line for a clean finish. Lowering elevation helps hit the perfect length and keeps the shape sharp.
